FAQ

1. Do I need a doctor’s referral to come for physiotherapy treatment?

Physiotherapists in Ontario are licensed to assess and provide treatment without a doctor’s referral. However, many benefits plans require that you have a referral in order to be reimbursed.

2. Is the treatment covered by OHIP or my benefit plan?

It has been many years since OHIP provided new clinics with a billing number. Only one clinic in Barrie is covered by OHIP and there are now strict limits (seniors, children, post-operative) to those who are covered. Most extended health plans cover registered physiotherapy. It is best to check with your plan administrator so that you are aware of your coverage limits.

3. I got hurt at work, are you covered by WSIB?

Physiotherapy is generally covered if your claim has been accepted by WSIB. Our clinic has chosen not to be involved in WSIB billing as their payment policies do not fit the framework of our clinic. There are several clinics in Barrie who will bill WSIB directly. It is optional for you to attend our clinic and submit your fees for partial reimbursement by WSIB.

4. How long will I need to come for physiotherapy?

The duration of your physiotherapy (# of sessions) will depend on several factors, including: the length of time you have had your injury or pain, how severe it is, and health and work-related factors. Following your assessment you will be given more specific information about your recommended treatment plan..

5. How long are the sessions?

Assessment duration for peripheral joints such as ankles and elbows is 30 minutes, and for the spine we require 45 minutes. Following motor vehicle collisions, one full hour is required in order to get a properly detailed history (for reporting purposes) and because there are often multiple areas of injury to assess. Treatment sessions vary from 15 – 60 minutes.

6. Is there anything I need to bring for my first visit?

For knee and hip problems it is a good idea to bring a pair of shorts. It is helpful for women to bring a tank top if they are having a shoulder or neck assessed. Any test results or background information about your problem that would help should also be brought to the first appointment.

7. Are evening appointments available?

Yes evening appointments are available on Monday and Wednesday.

8. How soon can I come for treatment after surgery?

Depending on the type of surgery and your surgeon’s protocol, sometimes it starts immediately but other times several weeks are required to begin the healing process. If you are scheduled for surgery it is a good idea to make sure that you have this information before going in so that we can schedule your appointments ahead of time.
